No “Love” for the Enemy
Fierce Girls Tennis Team Intimidating Opponents
They grow up so fast. It seems like just yesterday, we could hear the pitter patter of their little feet running aimlessly up and down the clay Tennis courts. This seemingly harmless crop of freshman tennis players back in 05 has, over the course of the last three years, turned into a hard hitting and ferocious senior machine.
Lately, Acalanes has been distracted by homecoming themes, class skits, and football games. These things seem purely trivial when compared to the riveting ferocious Girls Tennis season.
The Dons are getting it done this year and it is largely the result of the returning varsity squad. “We have a fair number of really talented younger players, but we have been really relying on our experienced seniors this year,” said senior Sarah Lindsay.
The starting rotation, which has only lost two matches this season, is three quarters seniors. With big wins against Los Lomas, Berkeley, Dublin and Alhambra, the seniors have defined their imposing and threatening presence in the notorious DFAL.
“We are pretty much a take no prisoners team” said senior Ellie Howard “We are mad hardcore to the bone…all day long”.
One example seen this season in which the Dons relied on their “hardcore to the bone” seniors was the Acalanes victory over DFAL rival Los Lomas. With the match tied 4-4, it hinged on the performance of the experienced senior duo of Jane Loria and Julia Brady. The two were able to flex their tennis talents to defeat their counterparts; their triumph ultimately won the match for Acalanes 5-4.
Jenny Reich’s pugnacity in her match at Campolindo was a sight to be seen. Imagine a pumped up, determined tennis paramount sporting a pair of jet black shades. She stood armed with her racquet, smashing little green ball after little green ball into her enemy’s court. Arc, smash, arc, smash; Reich would not surrender. She defeated her opponent with ferocity and style.
The Campolindo match also highlighted some of the younger talent on the team. The Dons get frequent help from the talented sophomores Valery Jorgenson and Elizabeth Landry. Equally vicious freshman, Grace Whitten, literally tore apart her cougar adversary. She won, without mercy, both of her sets 6-1 and 6-2.
The Don’s again demonstrated their savage attitude in their match versus Las Lomas. All six of the seniors that competed in the Las Lomas game won their matches relatively easily. Without sympathy, Acalanes won set after set and crushed the Knights
